Summer Reading

Summer reading is designed to foster a habit and love of reading.

In an effort to keep our reading list up-to-date and to assist parents in navigating summer reading, we are linking our summer reading list to The Classical Reader. This website has been designed to provide guidance and direction for the choosing, reading, and ultimately loving of worthy books, including those that have been deemed classics. The website contains a filter allowing parents to sort books by Grade, Reading Level, Genre, or Author.

A note from the publisher about the list:
“We have searched for books that are generally wholesome and affirming to a Christian worldview, even when they may portray the realities of this world’s brokenness and sin. Books with little or no redemptive value and books that contain patently offensive or sacrilegious language have been avoided. We have used these criteria for the selection of both classics and more recent publications. Some of the books selected for rhetoric students will require critical, Christian analysis as the themes will be more complex and mature.”

Parents should be aware that Grace Academy staff and faculty have not necessarily read every book on the list and parents should use their own best judgement as to which books are most appropriate for their child’s maturity level. In addition to The Classical Reader, available in print here, parents may find The Book Tree: A Christian Reference for Children’s Literature by Elizabeth McCallum and Jane Scott to be a helpful resource in choosing books for children preschool-age through high school.

Parents of rising kindergarten and 1st grade students are encouraged to read to their child an average of 15 minutes a day throughout the summer while 2nd grade students are encouraged to read on their own an average of 15 minutes a day. Rising 3rd grade students and above will have assigned books that are required for summer reading. In addition to the required books, students will choose additional books from The Classical Reader.
